Like a book,
is made up of a series of Chapters,
which have been written by a pen
whose ink was my feelings,
words, thoughts, actions,
non-actions, choices,
character development and relationships.
The Chapters are different
though overlapping;
and each Chapter influences the others;
each successful ending of one Chapter
is followed by an exciting beginning
of the next Chapter.
Like a butterfly, I metamorphosed,
through my anatomical and
physiological development Chapters,
from a successfully implanted embryo
through infancy, childhood,
adolescence (nikamea ndevu – I grew a beard
and started croaking), youth,
adulthood, and into old age.
I imbibed education I tell you,
through my intellectual growth Chapters,
from Nursery School, through Primary School,
Secondary School, and College.
Classes came, classes went;
as I chewed the enthralling books;
Then came the transition
from College to work.
Civil Service was interspersed with
entrepreneurship and consultancies.
Work was not always fun,
but I had a positive attitude
and gave it my best shot every day.
In every Chapter,
there were good times
accompanied by smiles
which told the story of
joys, celebrations, opportunities,
love, growth, triumph,
fulfillment and excitement.
In every Chapter
there were dull and ordinary times too
accompanied by frowns which told the story of
drama, mystery, loss, adversity,
hardships, heartaches,
and disappointment.
Some Chapters
were sweet but too short.
Other Chapters were long
with episodes that required
endurance, perseverance
and being hopeful;
but I never quit on a Chapter
that seemed too long.
My book is not finished yet.
In my current new Chapter;
entitled, “To new beginnings”,
I am done chasing,
and I’m done stressing,
over what I can’t control.
This is a time for me to look back,
to use the skills and lessons
learned in the previous Chapters
to guide me through.
I am looking forward,
to set new goals;
to dream new dreams;
to see life with new sights,
to learn new lessons,
to achieve new accomplishments,
and to continue enjoying nature and
God’s creation, which reveals
God’s beauty, glory, power, wisdom,
presence, creativity, and, most of all,
His loving care,
all under one roof.
