Humanity Pisses Off Mother Nature

Categories Nature, Science

Nature seems to be unhappy with humanity;
it has therefore decided to show its might
by stamping its foot down;
by reclaiming land and displacing people.
An angry nature is sending warning signals our way;
or how else can the following phenomena be explained?

Rivers are bursting their banks
and causing floods which
invade farmlands and cities;
examples being Rhine River
currently flooding cities in Europe; and
when Nile River flooded Khartoum in late 2020,
killing almost one hundred people,
destroying more than 1,000 houses,
and increasing the incidence
of water-borne illnesses.

Water levels have risen in Lakes
such as Victoria, Naivasha, Elementaita,
Nakuru, Bogoria and Baringo
flooding and destroying properties,
livelihoods, industry, infrastructure,
and terrestrial wildlife habitat.

Volcanoes are erupting;
an example being Mount Nyiragongo
in the DRC which erupted again
in May 2021 after nineteen years,
spewing furious, red-hot, molten lava
which killed two hundred and fifty people,
destroyed houses and schools;
and displaced thousands.

Hurricanes keep bombarding coastlines;
with the latest, Elsa,
even after being downgraded
into a tropical storm, bringing heavy rain,
gusty winds, flash flooding, death
and destruction in the Caribbean
and Eastern USA.

Landslides everywhere; most recently being
in Japan where a torrent of mud from
a deadly landslide crushed buildings
and buried others;
leaving death, injury and evacuations
along its path.

Heat waves in USA and Australia,
with the sun ruthlessly baking
and scorching everything that’s on its way,
thus causing deaths due to heat stroke,
in addition to vicious forest fires
displacing communities.

Even the coldest place on Earth,
the Antarctica, melted;
on February 6, 2020, weather stations
recorded the hottest temperature, 18.3°C,
ever recorded for Antarctica.

Severe winter storms sweeping across
the United States in February 2021,
caused a massive
electricity generation failure in Texas;
with resultant shortages of
water, food, and heat.
Over 4.5 million homes and businesses
were left without power; and
at least 151 people died
directly or indirectly.

Covid-19 continues to ravage the world
and nobody is sure that they are
out of the woods yet.

There are more frequent reports
of earth tremors and quakes.

And so Mother nature’s wrath continues.
What disturbs my mind though is that man
continues to behave as if
he has nature all planned out;
humans continue to scorn nature;
we continue to make nature unhappy.

How far can this impunity continue
before nature can’t take it any longer;
and decides to swallow humanity?

I am an epic introvert, who quickly becomes an open book when I pen what’s in my significantly fertile mind; fertile as a result of bombardment by realities that are continuously captured by my inquisitive eyes, ears which are constantly rubbing the ground, through constant reading, and through dreaming too.

Writing provides an opportunity to ‘say’ what my unapologetic quiet mouth will not say; which not only soothes me, but also bequeaths to me a relief, a release, and a hope that the written words will change the world, even if only one person at a time.

And so should you seek, that’s where to find me; deeply tucked inside the blankets of reading, seeing, listening, dreaming, and then writing.
