Dear child, with each
Happy-Father’s-day message I received,
I remembered
the surprise of new fatherhood
every time each one of you
came into my life
whether through birth
or when our paths met.
I remembered
the day when I met you for the first time;
it had never occurred to me before then,
that I could be so overcome
by anyone like that.
That day, as I wrote your name
across my heart;
it, my heart, spoke to me and said
it will love you to eternity.
Defenseless as you were in my arms,
your heart said to mine in return,
that it will love me back;
that you’d be a flame
that won’t lose its glow;
and right there
a new love full of passion
was born.
I knew right from the start,
that you trusted me with your heart;
that you cast your cares upon me;
that you counted on me to walk you,
down this long and winding road
called life, the best way I knew how.
It is now many days, months and years
since that day when you swept me away.
I thank God for the adult
that you have become.
I know I have been harsh now and then
but I’ve sure tried to make my life
an open door to you.
I’ve tried to fulfill
my guarantee to give you
not necessarily what you wanted,
but everything you needed.
It will soon be your turn
to be Fathers and Mothers.
Before your eyes can blink twice,
your children will be wishing you
Happy Father’s and Mother’s day.
And the cycle will be repeated once more.
I thank God for you;
since the time we’ve spent together
is adequate proof
that as I grow old
my heart and your heart will continue
to mutually trust each other’s company,
to be two hearts that soul-ly surrender
to each other;
a perfect union of two hearts,
between father and son; and likewise,
between father and daughter.
